In 1923 a petition was sent to Bishop O'Dea seeking a separate parish for the Fern Hill district, and Bishop O'Dea acceded to their request. April 15, 1924 was officially designated as the date of canonical erection of the new parish. Father Michael Murphy, then a curate at St. Patrick's in Tacoma, was appointed the first pastor.

The current church was dedicated on Sunday, March 17 1968. St. Ann has been part of the South East Tacoma Cluster since 1992.
